2. Chapel in the Hills: This unique “Stavkirke,” built in Rapid City in 1969, is an exact replica of the famous 850-year-old Borgund Church in Norway. Its intricate wood carvings, strange dragon heads, and ingenious pegged construction make it a place of unusual interest. Hand-carved Apostles’ heads and crosses named for St. Andrew inside, and dragon heads lifted to the sky outside represent the many intricate carvings at the “Stavkirke.” Summer visitors will at once be greeted by hostesses in Norwegian costumes. The Chapel’s financial support comes from visitors’ generosity, endowment gifts from families and individuals, memorials, weddings, and renewals of vows. 5. The Dahl Arts Center: Housing a unique 180 foot oil-on-canvas panorama spanning 200 years of U.S. history in the Cyclorama Gallery. Enhanced by the special lighting and narration, this extraordinary art work was designed and painted by acclaimed muralist Bernard P. Thomas. In addition to the Cyclorama Gallery, the Dahl Center includes galleries for temporary exhibitions and sales. 6. Crystal Cave Park: One of America’s most beautiful caverns, offering the area’s most complete and least strenuous tour. Virtually every type of cave formation found in the Black Hills will be seen during your 40 minute subterranean adventure. You will see 16 different types of formations, including the very rare Birdbaths. Guided by well trained, friendly staff. You will see millions of crystals formations, two water ponds and a rich history including a-replica of human remains found within the cave. Eighty percent of this living cave is covered by crystal where stalactites and columns are still growing. Originally called Nameless Cave, this cave was discovered by white men in 1880 and known to Indians for more than one thousand years. The end of the cave has yet been discovered. 7. Prairie Edge: (Art of the Lakota) Some think of this place as a Native American art gallery. Others see it as an authentic trading post reminiscent of days gone by. Each year thousands on people visit Prairie Edge for many different reasons: to find an interesting piece of artwork, to learn the traditions of another culture of perhaps gift for a friend. But they all leave with the same thing, an experience that lasts forever.
